Ozaki, a distributor of products for the Mac and I-devices, has come out with a rather odd-shaped camera specifically designed to be used with the iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone. It’s shaped like a lightbulb and called “iCare”. It’s designed to look after someone or something of importance to you. Its cleverly thought out, and really works great. Its a network camera with a simple setup for those of us whom aren’t tech geeks and want to be up and running quickly. The only problem is, the device doesn’t work too well for those of us whom want to use it on our computers. More on this later.

iCare is designed to be hung upside down in order to get the largest range of motion. It has a very sensitive, high quality, built in microphone and a MicroSD slot for recording video footage. However, you may want to be sure to use this only in the daylight, as Ozaki did not include any sort of Infrared LED’s to make the product suitable for night viewing.

There is no optical zoom, and the camera rotates only 180 degrees, compared to similar IP Cameras which can rotate further and have more features but lack the ease of setup that the iCare has.

This product is extremely innovative, although it is more of a toy than it is a practical use product. It comes at a hefty price tag for the toy It is. 399.00. Wow. For that much money, a customer could but a brand name IP camera and set it up for remote viewing via an iOS app. It wouldn’t be nearly as seamless as the iCare, but it would have more functions.

The iCare can only be viewed on one device and has the ability to email you when it detects motion. You have the ability to record video, but no sharing feature unless you manually remove the microSD card.

All in all, it’s a great product, if you want few features and aren’t too interested in using it with a computer. But this product could use a lot of improvement.

There’s a few battery cases for iPhones out there. Mostly because we are so addicted to the devices with all their functionality. Games, Movies, GPS, News, and no wonder we see others tethered to a wall outlet in train stations and charging their phones in Starbucks. A solution has come along with a sense of style in the form of a case for the iPhone called Maca which is available in various colors and 1200mAh. That’s about one full iPhone charge from down to about to 5 percent. You get the Maca case (Available in Light and Dark Blue, Red, Black, Green, Purple, Gold, and Silver) as well as a Micro USB Charging adapter which charges not only the Maca case but the iPhone in the case as well.

So, when you wake up in the morning you essentially have two charges set to go. This can be great if you’re heavy on GPS usage, whether it be Frequent users of Foursquare, anything associated with WiFi, or a GPS application for driving, those who post a lot of photos online and eat up a lot of data, or people whom play a lot of games and often watch movies on their devices. Basically, anything that requires a lot of processor power.

It’s a device with a solar panel on top, a removable, replaceable battery, and dual USB charging ability. It’s a bit bulky, but it’s a very clever and unique idea that isn’t very common in the terms of portable batteries.

The packaging is recyclable, which further promotes Revolve’s green effort. XeMini is RoHS compliant, fits perfectly in a backpack or purse, but not so much in a jacket because it is a bit large. Also, the power drains from the fully charged battery if left idle for more than a day which is very uncommon for Lithium Ion.

There’s network cameras in every shape and price point imaginable. From simple static cameras to Some which have a pan/tilt/zoom function, allowing for a larger field of view. Liveline offers this type, complete with wireless functionality which allows for the placement anywhere in your home or business to keep an eye on things remotely. It has no optical zoom as commercial models are often equipped with, and it isn’t made for outdoor use, however, it’s generally suitable for everyday monitoring and recording. It’s designed for simple setup without any technical knowledge of IP addresses, routing, or Port forwarding, which for many, are nothing to look forward to.

Included with the product is a mount for placing it on a wall or ceiling, as well as a “trial” version of the Liveline software. Liveline asks you to then login to Liveline.net and configure the camera from their site, which communicates with the hardware. It is designed to have limited setting control as not to overwhelm the basic computer user. For example, you can’t adjust things such as turning on and off the front LED’s or IR night vision feature. For this, you must call LiveLine and their friendly Technical Staff will send you instructions on how to do so.

I found the sound feature to be cool. The idea is to pick a pre-recorded sound and send it to the camera to play via a set of speakers you can plug into the jack on the rear of the device. However, you can’t record or upload your own sounds.

Liveline has a app for the iPhone which allows for remote control of the device. Essentially it’s Liveline.net bundled into an app. You can set preset positions for the camera such as One being the front door and Two being the kitchen, but they don’t appear by name on the app as they do on the web interface. The app is, however, a welcome addition to what Liveline provides.

The device is compatible with WPS enabled routers, allowing for a one button setup. There is a microphone built into the camera, but it does not broadcast audio to the mobile app.

You must pay a fee to use this camera. It is not free as one may think. Much like a cell phone, the camera is intended to be utilized with a payment plan for Liveline. The more you pay, the more features, such as better quality video. Many users will want to pay this monthly fee in exchange for a simple to use service such as Liveline.

Liveline is extremely simple and convenient. It is well thought out, yet, it isn’t overwhelming for those whom aren’t too tech-savvy. But it does have some errors. Sharing the video stream with another person is terribly cumbersome, requiring that they sign up for a Liveline account as well; sharing on social media sites such as Facebook does not work, and you can’t hear sound through the iPhone app, nor can you talk through your phone to the camera. The sound does work on occasion via the desktop version of Liveline.net, but it is not perfect and does need some tweaking.
I found that the color is off balance and there simply aren’t enough image rotation options to accommodate all the ways the camera could be mounted. But overall this is a great product.

Liveline. – $299.99

There are many solutions to getting the music out of your iPod/iPhone and into your car stereo. Perhaps the most popular way to do so is the FM Transmitter. The latest offering from Belkin, the TuneBase series, is a line of FM Transmitters designed to connect to your i-Device and broadcast to your car stereo.

The TuneBase FM w/Hands Free is a gooseneck-style dock for your iPod or iPhone. It has two functions. One of which is transmitting audio from your device to the radio for hearing over your speakers in the car, and the second function being, it charges the device as well. If you have an iPhone, you simply download the free app if you wish, to find the best frequency of which to broadcast on. You then tune in your car stereo to the matching frequency and your music is broadcast to the antenna to the radio. It’s best to set this station as a preset for quick access. When the power is turned off and your leave the dock in the car, the product remembers what station you were on last, then continues broadcasting on that frequency. This is a great feature. In addition, there is a button at the bottom for answering calls which are also transmitted to the stereo.

The only issue with these products, is that you must deal with the static. The transmission power is not great enough to get a crisp clear signal, and depending on where you drive, it may get worse before it gets better. The best option is the Auxiliary input on your car stereo, which many older cars lack. The TuneBase FM w/ Hands-Free is still a great product and produces a decent sound quality. The dock tilts for portrait or landscape orientation, and features a built-in mic, replacing the one on the phone for better conversations.

We have featured many earphones on Techminute, but nothing like the Phonak PFE122. They’re essentially a set of earphones for your iPod, iPhone device, or anything with a headphone output, but they’re specifically designed for people which prefer high quality sound. They come with different sized ear tips for different sized ears, as well as an in-line button which controls the call and has a microphone for better quality calls. They come with a small lanyard bag for easy transport as well.

The sound is stellar. Particularly from music. These earphones are clearly aimed at bass response, and are a great choice for iPhone users whom are picky about good quality sound. It’s hard to find earphones which accentuate the lows and highs as much as the PFE122. Most of the cheaper low-end earphones are simply tinny and do not often block out unwanted noise as these do. Being that these are made by a hearing aid company, i’m not a bit surprised they are of superior quality. The earphones can be worn with the cable facing straight down, or curled behind the ear to get it out of the way. Included is a pair of Comply™ ear tips, which can be squished in your fingers, and they will expand to the form of your ear canal slowly after they are inserted. However, these get dirty very quickly and can’t be easily washed or cleaned. They are expensive to replace. I personally used the silicone eartips, but, flanged ones work the best. Also included, so earwax doesn’t get inside the earphones, is a set of filters which are replaceable via the included tool.

The cable isn’t too thick to get in the way, but not too thin to break easily. They stay coiled very well when they are thrown in a pocket or bag. The sound stage is wide, yet, the earphones don’t ache after prolonged periods of use. These are very high performing earphones and aren’t the kind you will find just anywhere. But they are very much worth the price of $179.99 for the sound they give off and the durability that comes with. I do suggest to Phonak that they include Flanged eartips in their products, sims because the standard types tend to get moist and fall out of the typical ear canal quite quickly while walking. Flanged eartips will grab onto the walls of the ear canal while creating a tighter seal that won’t come loose as easily.

These Earphones are well worth the investment and will deliver great sound for many years.

With our power-hungry devices becoming more and more readily available, and more dependent on a fully charged battery, there is a rising concern on how to keep these devices charged when an outlet is not available. I have noticed many people often carry a backpack. What better way to keep your devices charged than in the bag itself? Powerbag is the answer. When you first look at it, the product catches the eye with it’s wide array of colors, and styles. You’d never have any idea that it was unique from other backpacks. Powerbag is a sturdy, well designed and comfortable bag, but it has something the others don’t. A built in Lithium battery which is able to charge your electronic devices. Simply plug in the Powerbag to charge, and whenever you have a dead device, you can simply use the included Mini-USB or Apple 30 Pin connector to charge your devices. If you have another USB device, there is a male USB plug inside the backpack which can be used to charge your device as well.

The bag is very comfortable and large enough to hold a laptop, with plenty of room for folders, pens, and anything else necessary. Powering all this is a Removable 3000mAh battery. While it won’t be enough power to charge an iPad, it is more than ample juice to get your dead i-Device, Android Phone, e-Book Reader, or MP3 Player running again. The batteries are upgradable and you can buy a backpack, briefcase, or messenger bag with different sized batteries already included or you could simply upgrade to a larger capacity battery later on. On the front is a soft touch button which shows the battery level indicated by 4 LED’s. The more LED’s light up, the more power you have in your bag waiting to be used. If you have your devices connected while the bag is plugged in, they charge first. There’s even a tablet pouch up front which is perfect for an iPad or Kindle.

This is a well made, cleverly designed bag and it’s a must for anyone who needs a boost while carrying the stuff they need. After all, who wants to sit tethered to an outlet at the Railroad station?

The Sangean WR-5 Cabinet Radio is the latest in a seemingly endless world of iPod/iPhone accessories made to suit these users.

Sangean, a radio company, has recently introduced the WR-5, which is a wooden encased radio and iPod/iPhone dock. It has a built in FM tuner as well as dual alarms. What I was surprised at mostly was the sound. I was really Impressed. I’m amazed at this product has such big sound in a small package. The treble is well represented while the lows were not too deep but also low enough so you can know they are there. I tested the unit out in a few different settings and found it works best as a simple nightstand clock radio. The front LCD display is dimable which comes in handy at night when you’re trying to shut your eyes.

There is an slot in the back which houses a battery in the event that the power goes out, and a retractable FM antenna, as well as ports for an AM antenna, along with an Auxiliary Line-In port in the event you wish to connect a device such as a laptop. The included in fared remote allows for adjusting the display brightness, radio tuning, and basic iPod settings from across the room. In radio mode, the display shows station RDS information, such as current song, and station info.

I highly recommend this product and hope that more people come to understand that, just because something has a small footprint doesn’t mean it wont produce big sound. However, this isn’t the best option if you are even the slightest light sensitive when trying to sleep, as the lowest brightness setting is very bright.

The Latest offering from logitech comes in the form of a mouse specifically designed for the hand in terms of ergonomics. It’s rechargeable via Micro USB, as well as completely wireless. The included receiver is very small and the whole unit can be tossed into a bag for easy portability.

The Performance Mouse MX uses Optical Darkfield Laser technology which can work on surfaces such as glass and still offer smooth tracking, and the scroll wheel is a delight to use.

There are a lot of accessories available for iPod and iPhone. The Stem TimeCommand is relatively new to the market. It has a unique circular design, orange LED display, and an app which can e downloaded to set alarms, change the sound, and display weather forecasts. As of recently, more manufacturers have been touting their ability to work with an app specifically designed for their product, which is a fantastic idea. This particular product has the ability to control the lamp that it is plugged into, and turn it on and off, via the app, or a button located on the device itself, above the snooze bar.
The dock port tilts to accommodate all iPods, iPhones and iPads, even though the iPad 2 is a bit large and heavy for the alarm clock. The documentation says that The TimeCommand was designed To feature the iPad as well, but I am not sure the alarm clock is heavy enough to hold it down. It is tough to dock a product with one hand. You must tilt the dock port forward, them dock the device with the other hand. In terms of sound, it is okay, but could be a lot better. The product could have housed better speakers, or could have been constructed a bit larger to hold a woofer. It’s not terrible if you have the StemConnect app installed, from which you can manually adjust the sound to your taste. The 10-band equalizer works okay, but is unlabeled and does not list the frequencies of any of the sliders. It also lacks presets and a reset button. The bass enhancer is about the same as Apple’s built-in Bass Booster Equalizer feature, under EQ. The alarm can also be programmed to turn on the attached lamp, and play an iPod playlist.

I found the ability to control the lamp from the clock, to be very innovative. There is no FM radio, so you are stuck with what is on your iPod or iPhone. Even without a radio, it is still a great product for a dorm or bedroom. It has a lot of great features.
